We deliver trade skills learning in our two dedicated purpose built workshops, fully equipped to the highest standard including exhaust extraction, hydraulic motor vehicle lifts, air operated tool facilities, heating and ventilation systems, diagnostic computer equipment, welding, fabrication, tyre fitting and balancing, and purpose built test rigs. We have two fully equipped learning rooms where our young people learn life skills and basic skills.

To tackle the growing rise in obesity and poor diet amongst our young people we have introduced an on-site gym providing personal fitness plans, and a juice bar enabling them to learn healthy ways of preparing and cooking food, and giving them a social area to discuss issues that are important to them.

Our volunteering community bicycle refurbishment project enables our young people to repair old donated bicycles in our workshops, which benefit good causes like impoverished local families enabling them to take family cycling days out, St Francis Hospice for the terminally ill, the local women’s refuge, and Falconer children’s orphanage in Zambia. This volunteering project enables them to better integrate with the local community, altering how they are often perceived by community members.

Our 16+ programme is dedicated to those young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) or who wish to remain with Motorvations for a further year to continue their education. Our project teaches these young people motor skills, tyre changing and balancing, welding and fabricating, life skills and basic skills in literacy, numeracy and information technology. Our on-site careers adviser works to provide job readiness programmes for our young people, assisting with CVs, interview techniques and job applications.

We offer a full range of diversionary, physical activities including mountain biking, karting, 4 wheel drive, motorcross, pony treking, caving, climbing, canoeing, dry ski slope ski-ing, swimming and many sporting and activity days. We believe that improving our young peoples health and well-being contributes to their academic attainment and personal growth.

Method

Our project works in a very different way to the school: we have a high ratio of staff to young people (normally 1:2), use a more informal approach and a more practical-based 'hands-on' learning programme focusing on areas which interest our clients.

The majority leave after one or two years on our programme with significantly enhanced self-esteem, a range of nationally accredited certificates based in motor mechanics and ultimately a real chance of a decent future life in employment with resultant economic independence.

Accreditation

Awards are available for pupil achievement within the course and the Open College Network syllabus allows achievement to be recognised in several well planned and clearly defined areas of work. The vast majority of student are expected to achieve success in these basic yet comprehensive, nationally accredited modules. In addition the project participates in the Jack petchey Foundation Achievement Award Scheme.

As well as motor based modules, the project also offers basic skills tution, life skills training, sexual health and relationship education and substance misuse training.

We aim to continue to improve our service for our learners by adding new courses which may assist and interest them.
